London Program April 2007 in Association with the Carbon Trust

This four day workshop was held in April 2007. Two days were held at the NaREC (New and Renewable Energy Centre) outside Newcastle and the final two days were held at the Work Foundation, London.

Companies attending this programme included:

A Greener Place
A Greener Place design, supply, install and maintain energy efficient heating and lighting solutions for domestic and small commercial customers. They focus on an initial assessment of the issues to supply the most cost effective solution and a high quality level of service. To underpin this type of business at the early stage of the market, they offer supply and install conventional systems.

Aquamarine Ltd
Aquamarine is developing a near shore wavepower device – The Oyster. It is being developed by experienced offshore and wave engineers who report a large amount of wave testing and finite element modelling. The device pumps high-pressure water onshore where a Pelton Wheel converts it to electricity.  They a have a trial scheduled for Orkney site of a single unit.  Oyster also provides desalination and has a tidal generator as well.

Carbon8 Systems Ltd
Carbon8 Systems is commercialising a novel process to treat contaminated soils and industrial wastes with carbon dioxide via a process of ‘carbonation’ in which carbon dioxide forms a calcium carbonate shell around waste, thus rendering it harmless. Because the process involves ‘fixing of CO2’ the process is also of interest for its carbon abatement properties. Depending on the application, the process produces commercially valuable by-products that can be sold for use in the construction and other industries.

Glowled Ltd
Glowled offer a solid state LED light bulb using existing light fittings. Their bulb offers improved efficiency over existing filament and fluorescent bulbs and a longer life.

Hydralube Ltd
Hydralube have a plasma based lubricant to replace standard lubricants. This reduces friction in gearboxes and other machinery hence saving energy.

Lysanda Ltd
Lysanda offers a vehicle monitoring system for commercial fleets to optimise fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions. The system produces predictive data which can be monitored at the fleet operator’s base and in the cab. This is then used to optimise fuel consumption and reduce CO2.

Morgan Everett Ltd
Morgan Everett have developed ‘Pyropure’ an innovative waste destruction unit to be used at point of waste generation (initially in blocks of apartments) thus removing the need for waste collection and transport (therefore reducing cost and avoiding additional CO2 emissions). The system operates at a lower temperature than incineration, and flushes waste ash directly into the sewage system.

Petandco Ltd
Petandco have licensed a technology to recycle waste plastic bottles so they can be used as food or drink containers. The method effectively melts down and reuses the plastic rather than other techniques which wash and clean plastic for re-use.

Scotrenewables Ltd
The Scotrenewables Tidal Turbine (SRTT) system is an innovative free-floating rotor-based tidal current energy converter, which has been under development for over three years. Specifically designed also for low-maintenance and economic efficiency, the Scotrenewables Tidal Turbine concept incorporates the key design principles of minimisation of component numbers and use of existing proven technology.  This enables a fast and relatively low risk route to commercialisation, and clearly puts the SRTT concept in a strong position ahead of many of its competitors.

Sebus Ltd
Sebus has developed a patented process for producing a ‘sucrose ester’ that is far cheaper than existing methods. Sucrose esters are of interest in applications where non-toxic or bio-degradable qualities are required; until now applications have been limited to markets such as cosmetics that can support higher production costs.
Significantly lower production costs that can be achieved using patented Sebus technology will allow the use of sucrose esters in the far larger markets of: surfactants, lubricants, emulsifiers, polymer additives, anti static agents and plastics.
